Since our inception in 2003, JBAR has sterilized over 15,000 dogs and cats in the Jaltemba Bay area. As one of the largest sterilization operations on the west coast of Mexico, our bi-annual clinics are made possible with the kind help from numerous volunteers; the generosity of our supporters; the expertise of Mexican & Canadian veterinarians, and participation from the community.
In the past sixteen months alone, March 2023 – July 2024, JBAR sterilized over 1,250 animals. This reduced the potential animal population by several thousand puppies and kittens. Sterilization not only benefits animal welfare and the local community, but also improves the holiday experience for the thousands of visitors who arrive each year to enjoy Mexico’s beaches and unique culture.
JBAR is a 100% volunteer organization. We do not operate a facility to house and care for sick or injured animals. Instead, we rely on a vast network of skilled and kind-hearted volunteers to help us help those in need. In situations where an animal is sick or injured, JBAR offers resources such as licensed medical care, diagnosis, x-rays, surgery where needed, along with a range of medicines and other treatments. We also coordinate travel, logistics and equipment such as crates, traps, leashes, and collars for example.
Sick or Injured animals who are homeless often need foster care to facilitate recovery. In these cases, we identify volunteers and help them prepare for their furry guest and we assist in monitoring care and progress during recovery.
JBAR strongly believes that managing a healthy animal population begins with education and awareness. As part of this philosophy, our volunteers visit local communities and schools to discuss the humane and
ethical treatment of animals along with responsible pet care.
This includes sharing information on the importance of sterilization, vaccination, and nutrition along with how to treat animals with compassion, care and respect. We also support all government initiatives in favor of animal rights protections This effort is making a difference as the number of unwanted animals is decreasing in the region while the level of health is increasing.
One of easiest ways people like to contribute to helping animals is by providing them with good food. This can be as simple as putting out a dish of food and water on the sidewalk, or more elaborate means, such as installing feeding stations.
Feeding Animals Nayarit (FAN) is an arm of JBAR focused on working with the community to install feeding stations where they are needed most. In some instances, a group of neighbors will request a feeding station to be installed and they look after the care and filling independently. In other cases, where there is a large stray population or severely marginalized neighborhood, FAN installs and manages the station. In all cases, the objective is to provide nutrition to these animals while attempting to rehome and to balance responsibility for their care with owners.
There is nothing more satisfying for all of us at JBAR than to witness an animal transform from a sick, neglected, and unloved animal to a vibrant, happy animal filled with excitement and joy in anticipation of a new fur-ever family to love.
From the first night that they can sleep with a full belly knowing they are safe, to the day they find their family, each journey is unique and special. While it’s ideal to find local families to adopt, love is blind and has no borders. Whatever the circumstance, we help find the perfect match and then facilitate all the requirements to get the animal to its new family. It’s the best part of our work and makes everything we do and everything we endure worthwhile.
From education and awareness to sterilizations and helping injured animals, JBAR relies 100% on the kindness of our donors. For many people, a financial donation is one way to give back to this community that gives so much in terms of friendliness and hospitality. For others, it’s simply a contribution to help make the world a better place, or because they believe every animal deserves a chance. Whatever the reason, the generous donations we receive help us continue this important work.
Our bi-annual sterilization clinics require the majority of our budget as we pay for every animal sterilized. Monthly veterinarian costs are also significant as we provide care throughout the year. To help offset this, JBAR volunteers organize a multitude of events to supplement private donations. This includes dinner and a show, bingos, 50/50 draws, adult refreshment stands, raffles, bake sales, contests and so on.
We are also blessed with many non-financial donations such a food for our clinic volunteers, donations of crates, leashes, collars, paper towels, pee pads, food, litter, pet shampoo, gently used sheets and towels, medications, and medical supplies such as sutures, alcohol, and gloves.
It’s a never-ending effort, but one we do for the love of animals. If you would like to contribute, contact JBAR at jbardonate@gmail.com Financial donations can also be sent by Paypal or e-transfer to jbardonate@gmail.com
